Let’s create the world of TERAVIT! Introduction to MagicaVoxel


All of TERAVIT’s voxel models are made using “MagicaVoxel”, a free software that can be used to design your own character, animal and a variety of different objects.

We are currently considering making it possible to use voxel models created by everyone in the world of TERAVIT. Let’s take a look at how we can use MagicaVoxel to create our own characters, while enjoying TERAVIT at the same time.

In this series of articles, we will introduce MagicaVoxel and how to create the blocks that make up the world of TERAVIT.

What is MagicaVoxel?

MagicaVoxel is a free voxel creation tool.
“Voxels” are created using boxes to form three-dimensional objects, so you can create characters and objects intuitively, just like building blocks!

How to install Magica Voxel?

① Access the (https://ephtracy.github.io/) official website.

② Select “Download (Latest)”.

③ Windows PC users can select “MagicaVoxel-” to download MagicVoxel.
(For Mac Users: Please select “MagicaVoxel-”.)
*The version may change depending on the development of MagicaVoxel.

④ Double-click the downloaded zip file to extract it and open the folder.

⑤ Double-click on the “Magica Voxel” icon in the folder to launch Magica Voxel and view the modeling screen.

Let’s get ready to create blocks!

TERAVIT’s voxels have a specific color and pattern!

First, let’s download the block data; “block.vox”, used in TERAVIT from here, and save it in anywhere on your PC.

After the download is complete, click the “Folder icon” in the upper right corner of the screen and open the “block.vox” data file.

If you save the data in the “vox” folder where MagicaVoxel.exe is saved, you can select it from the Project List on the right side of the screen!

Load the data, and when it looks like the image below, the preparations are complete!

It’s time to make blocks!

You’re all set!
Now let’s actually create a block that we can use in TERAVIT!

1. Drawing the blocks
Paint the voxels with patterns and colors to create your own original blocks!

① In the “Brush Tool” to the right of the “Color Palette”, select “Paint” to add colors.

② The next step is to select the brush type. First, let’s select the top left brush, which can easily be dragged to draw a straight line.

③ Select the color you want from the color palette by clicking on it.

④ If you click on a block (object) in this state, you can use the paint tool to apply the selected color to draw in any pattern or picture you like.

How to control the viewpoint

Rotate Right click + Drag
Parallel Movement Middle mouse button + Drag
Zooming Mouse wheel

Recommended brush type

This brush allows you to draw straight lines by dragging.
This brush allows you to draw as if you were using a pencil.
This brush allows you to paint an area in the same color as the selected surface.

④ Try out the different brush types, adjust the viewpoint while drawing to find an easier angle, and create your own original blocks!

⑤ When you have finished drawing, the original block is ready!

2. Save the blocks you’ve created!
Don’t forget to save the file when you are done.

・To save your work, click on the “Floppy icon” in the upper right corner of the screen. You can also press “Ctrl” + “S” (“Cmd” + “S” for Mac users) together to save.
* You may save it in the “vox” folder located in the Magica Voxel App using any file name.

*The saved blocks can be loaded at any time from the “File” tool in the menu at the top right of the screen.
